NewTek TriCaster Giveaway

LAS VEGAS — NewTek (www.newtek.com) will give away four TriCaster TCXD850 HD portable live production systems at NAB as part of the company’s TriCaster-A-Day Giveaway. TriCaster allows users to produce, live stream, broadcast, project and record HD and SD network-style productions. A single operator or small team can switch between multiple cameras, virtual inputs and live virtual sets, while inserting clips, titles and motion graphics with multi-channel effects. The TriCaster TCXD850 costs $24,995, although the TriCaster family of products begins at $4,995.

NAB attendees can find registration postcards in the Show Daily and at the NewTek smart car HD portable live production vehicle, which will be parked in front of South Hall. Cards will also be available at the NewTek Booth. Drawings will be held each day and winners will be notified by email.

In addition, NewTek will host their annual “Broadcast Minds” event at the show, bringing together numerous digital media strategists. Panelists will discuss how companies can capitalize on the digital market. The event will be held on Tuesday, April 12, from 6-8pm in the Renaissance Hotel Ballroom.

NewTek Releases New Hardware Interface for TriCaster

Video and graphics production equipment manufacturer NewTek has introduced a hardware control surface for its TriCaster live production system.

The TriCaster TCXD850 CS provides a physical connection including a three-axis joystick to control the TriCaster’s 24-channel functions and effects.


“With live events, there’s no second chance,” said Franck Henri LaFage, managing director, NewTek Europe, at BVE. “You have to be certain and you have to be fast. Our goal with every new product is to give our users the opportunity to deliver the best quality live production possible, with confidence and accuracy.”

Some of the TriCaster TCXD850 CS benefits include the use of Flash or Windows Media to deliver live streams direct to the web; live virtual set controls to deliver zoom levels for camera shots within the virtual set; and media player controls which operators can use to can select from the titles bin, still store, and sound player, as well as cycle through presets and manage playback options.


NewTek has also released the Virtual Set Editor (VSE), which permits TriCaster operators to create and customise their own virtual sets by adding their personal artwork, or composing layers in Photoshop, before importing the layers into the VSE.

How to Stream Video from Your Tricaster to Ustream

Before starting

  • You will need version 2.5 (or higher) of the Tricaster software (available from here).
  • A Ustream account (register here).
  • A reasonable internet connection (at least 300kbps). You can check your upload speed here.

On Your Tricaster

Click the X on the right-hand side of the screen and choose Admin Mode to enter the desktop. Open the browser and navigate to http://ustream.tv and log in to your account. Go to Manage Your Show -> Settings, then at the bottom of the page, click Advanced Settings and then the Download the Flash Media Encoder XML file link.

Click Start Menu -> Run… and type in winrtme. Click OK. Then click Start Menu -> All Programs -> Adobe -> Flash Media Live Encoder 3.1. You can ignore any errors that occur. In Flash Media Live Encoder, click File -> File and open the XML file that was downloaded earlier from the Ustream site.

Take note of the FMS URL and Stream values, we will be using these later on.

In Tricaster Studio, click Launch Tricaster and then click the Record Stream tab. From the Stream Type dropdown box select either of the two Flash Ustream options. Copy the values for FMS URL and Stream ID from Flash Media Live Encoder and paste them into Tricaster Studio.


Finally, click Stream Live Output. You’re now streaming live to Ustream!



On another, internet-connected, computer
Open your browser and log in to Ustream. Click the Broadcast button.

Select the show that you would like to broadcast and click the Broadcast button.

The Ustream console will appear. You can control your broadcast from here using the Start/Stop Broadcast button, and adjust any settings such as video/audio quality and volume.
